Victoria Gozo – Discover the Capital
Victoria – The Heart of Gozo
Welcome to Gozo! When you step onto our island, you might be tempted to head straight for the beaches and the countryside. But overlooking our capital, Victoria (affectionately known by locals as Rabat), is a missed opportunity.
Victoria is where the old and the new Gozo collide. It's a place of quiet contemplation within the massive walls of the Cittadella, and a vibrant hub of daily life, markets, and culture below. Here is our essential guide to exploring this captivating city.
The Crown Jewel: The Cittadella
Rising sharply above the surrounding plain, the Cittadella has been the focus of island life for centuries. For much of Gozo's history, the entire population had to retreat within its walls by night for protection!
Today, it is a UNESCO World Heritage nominee and an absolute must-see.
The Ramparts: Walk the 360-degree fortifications. From here, you can see almost the entire island of Gozo spread out below you. It's the best view on the island.
The Cathedral: The stunning Cathedral of the Assumption (built 1697-1711) is a Baroque masterpiece. Be sure to look up—the iconic "dome" is actually a trompe l'oeil painting, a masterpiece of perspective on a flat ceiling!
The Museums: The Cittadella is home to the Old Prison, the Gozo Museum of Archaeology, and the Natural Science Museum.

Life in the Lower City (The Rabat Alleys)
Descend from the fortress and explore the maze of charming, winding streets that wrap around the base of the rock.
It-Tokk (Independence Square): The main square is the beating heart of Victoria. Every morning, a small market springs to life here, selling lace, local produce, and souvenirs. It's the ideal place for a morning coffee and some people-watching.
St. George's Square & Basilica: Tucked behind It-Tokk, this square feels like an extension of Gozo's living room. It's anchored by the magnificent St. George's Basilica, a golden baroque marvel known for its stunning interior decoration.

A Green Oasis: Villa Rundle Gardens

Need a break from the walking? Villa Rundle Gardens is a lush, shaded park right in the middle of Victoria. It's a peaceful retreat filled with palm trees, exotic flora, and often hosts local craft fairs or events. It's the perfect spot to sit, relax, and enjoy the Gozitan sun away from the crowds.
Victoria is not just a city; it's the soul of Gozo. We know you'll love it as much as we do. Enjoy your exploration!
